While serving in the US Army, CeCe was paralyzed from the waist down. During a high-altitude jump her parachute became entangled with another parachute, and she fractured her spine when she landed. After her accident, doctors initially told her family she would never walk again. But after her surgery she begged to be wheeled to a gym in the hospital and forced herself up and started her rehabilitation. As a speaker, author, and advocate, CeCe has dedicated her life to help other disabled veterans overcome their obstacles in life to live a life with purpose. CeCe will be our “Wheels on the ground” to guide our audience through the adaptation of the veteran’s home.
Dave is a veteran of both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Coast Guard. In the Army he served as a radar repair technician with tours of duty including Korea. He joined the Coast Guard in 1983 and served as a helicopter rescue swimmer. While on active duty at the Coast Guard Aviation Training Center in Mobile, Alabama, he contracted septic shock pneumococcus sepsis. He was hospitalized for three months and lost all four limbs and some internal organs due to the infection. Dave is an avid woodworker and will serve as the “Top Secret Special Project” creator. Dave will work in the American Homecoming wood shop and will share the build with the audience. At the end of the show, the plans for the Top Secret build will be made available so our viewing audience will be able to build the project on their own at home.
As a designer, Kara lives by the motto “Do what you love and use it to change the world.” As a set decorator, she has created scenes/sets that tell the story of the characters in films and TV. This way of thinking has greatly affected the way she approaches interior design in the homes of our Veterans. She not only creates a space that is beautiful, but one that practical for a Disabled Veteran. “I want the spaces I create to celebrate the history and passions of the people who live there, while also inspiring them to go after their dreams!”
